Children and young readers aged 10 and up, young adults, classic all-age literature, lovers of sophisticated artistic illustrations, lovers of fairy tales, and lovers of historical children’s books
Sophie de Ségur’s (1799-1874) Neue Feenmärchen are among the most beautiful and at the same time most original contributions to this quintessentially French literary genre, an absolute must for every friend of fantastic fairy literature. With the present book, Sophie’s fairy tales are introduced to readers in German for the first time.
These timeless fairy tales, written in 1857, stand at the beginning of a sequence of twenty children’s and young adult books by the author, all of which became bestsellers. With more than 30 million copies sold in France alone, Sophie remains one of the most successful children’s authors to this day, a national icon and, in a sense, France’s historical Joanne K. Rowling.
With Sophie de Ségur, the Golden Age of children’s and young adult literature also begins in the second half of the nineteenth century, an age of Lewis Carroll, Jules Verne, Johanna Spyri, Carlo Collodi, and others, which she helped decisively to found.
Virginia Frances Sterrett (1900-1931) was a gifted American artist and illustrator whose far too brief life allowed her to illustrate only three books. The illustrations for the Neue Feenmärchen were her first work, created in 1920 shortly after she had been diagnosed with tuberculosis.
Sterrett is rightly regarded as an insider’s tip among connoisseurs and as one of the most brilliant illustrators of the twentieth century. It is difficult to resist the delicate, fantastic beauty and haunting loveliness of her magical pictorial worlds.
Thus, in the Neue Feenmärchen, two extraordinary artists, separated by a human lifetime, enter into a unique aesthetic symbiosis. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of this wondrous book.
